The wedding invitations are sent out for either the wedding ceremony and reception or reception on its own and can take many different forms depending on who is hosting the wedding.

The wording is dictated by whose family are the hosts and their particular situations. The following are examples of wording that can be used for different situations if you are not using pre-printed invites:

If the Bride’s parents are hosts:

Mr. & Mrs. Terry Jones
request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their daughter
Victoria Jones to Mr. Thomas Smith
at The Holy Trinity Church on Saturday, 17th August 2002 at 4.00 pm and afterwards at The Hilton Hotel.

If the Bride’s parents are hosts but divorced:

Mr. Terry Jones and Mrs. Brenda Jones
request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their daughter
Victoria Jones to Mr. Thomas Smith
at The Holy Trinity Church on Saturday, 17th August 2002 at 4.00 pm and afterwards at The Hilton Hotel.

If the Bride’s parents are hosts but mother is remarried:

Mr. Terry Jones and Mrs. Brenda Clark
request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their daughter
Victoria Jones to Mr. Thomas Smith
at The Holy Trinity Church on Saturday, 17th August 2002 at 4.00 pm and afterwards at The Hilton Hotel.

If the Bride’s widowed mother is host:

Mrs. Brenda Jones
requests the pleasure of your company at the marriage of her daughter
Victoria Jones to Mr. Thomas Smith
at The Holy Trinity Church on Saturday, 17th August 2002 at 4.00 pm and afterwards at The Hilton Hotel.

If the Bride and Groom are hosts:

Miss Victoria Jones and Mr. Thomas Smith
request the pleasure of your company at their marriage at The Holy Trinity Church on Saturday, 17th August 2002 at 4.00 pm and afterwards at The Hilton Hotel.

If the Groom’s Parents are hosts:

Mr. and Mrs. David Smith
request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their son
Thomas Smith to Miss Victoria Jones
at The Holy Trinity Church on Saturday, 17th August 2002 at 4.00 pm and afterwards at The Hilton Hotel.

However the invitation is worded, it should always contain all the vital information:

  • Detail whether the invitation is for the wedding ceremony and reception or for the reception only
  • The specific names of those to be invited, i.e. if children are invited or any extra persons your guest will be invited to bring i.e. Plus One
  • An RSVP address and telephone number or e-mail address
  • The name of the person to return the reply to
  • Any additional information such as details on theme weddings and whether confetti is allowed at the wedding venue.
