Leaving the reception early Go Back to Previous Page Search this site

Many newly-weds choose to leave their reception early and head off on honeymoon, leaving their guests to enjoy the last few dances of the evening. In days gone by, a couple left the reception early and went on honeymoon because they hadn't been co-habiting before the wedding and didn't have a home of their own to go back to. Traditionally, before she leaves, the bride tosses her bouquet to a bridesmaid or young female guest who, tradition has it, will be the next in line for marriage. The wedding car is nowadays decorated with streamers and tin cans, but traditionally, old shoes were tied to the back of the car. This was seen to represent the bride’s transition from her father to the groom.
